The 2023 New York Mets have been nothing short of a disappointment as they fall to four games under .500 after a 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
After the offseason spending spree by owner Steve Cohen, many are looking to point the finger at who to blame for the team’s lack of success, with many fans eyeing manager Buck Showalter.
WFAN’s Danielle McCartan laid out her hierarchy of blame on Sunday but listed Showalter at No. 3 on her list, trailing the players (particularly the pitchers) and No. 1 culprit — general manager Billy Eppler.

“It’s the general manager and has always been the general manager, for me,” McCartan said. “Billy Eppler was a questionable hire from the jump.”
McCartan pointed to the Mets’ biggest weaknesses — bullpen and designated hitter — and how neither were addressed in the offseason.
“I’ve been on him since the day he traded for Daniel Vogelbach,” she said. “At the conclusion of last season, everybody and their mothers knew [the Mets] would have deficiencies in their bullpen and at their designated hitter position. Apparently, not Billy Eppler.”
McCartan also took aim at Cohen for comments he recently made about how “things aren’t going well you have to witness how the management team operates and how they deal with these problems. That’s what we’re going to see.”
“No, you already did that. You already saw that,” she said. “You already did give him an offseason to work with this roster and he failed. The bullpen’s a mess, there is no designated hitter and these are not new problems unique to the 2023 New York Mets.”
