Why does Buck Showalter still believe in 2023 Mets? 'Because they're good'

The Mets lost yet another series on Thursday, falling to a previously struggling Astros team despite New York beginning the series with its two aces on the mound.

Now, as the NL East deficit reaches 13.5 games, the Mets continue to battle with the question of what it will take to turn the season around.

Still, Buck Showalter has no doubt that, at some point, it's going to happen.

"It's not always, 'the sky is falling.' They don't do that," Showalter said of his group. "There's certainly a lot influences that can make you take your mindset there if you allow it, but you can't do that at this level, and these guys don't. At some point, I feel like hopefully somebody's going to pay for their frustration."

Asked why he still believes the Mets will inevitably take their anger out on opponents at some point, Showalter says he knows how good the team is, even if they haven't shown it much in 2023.

"Because they're good," Showalter said. "If you live in that 'what have you done for me lately' world, you're not going to be doing them a service. I've got a long memory how good they are."

So, while the calendar nears July, and soon after the All-Star break, it is no longer early in the season, and while the Mets believe they will go on a run, it now becomes a battle against time, and whether that run will come when it's too late.

"We're going to get out of it," Daniel Vogelbach said. "We're going to go on a winning streak. I don't know when that is. I wish I could tell you when. But I truly believe it's going to happen and we're going to get right back to where everyone believes we should be."
