Yan Gomes: NL East has 'unbelievable competition,' Lindor could be big influence on Mets

Yan Gomes has become a regular on WFAN’s “The Fight Fan with Pete Hoffman” podcast, but this time, he also decided to talk a little baseball with Pete Hoffman.

Of course, Hoff couldn’t resist needling Gomes about how his Washington Nationals “stole” Brad Hand from the Mets, but Gomes reminded that there’s another ex-teammate of his out there for the taking.

“You can still have Trevor Bauer,” Gomes laughed. “He’s a heck of a pitcher. He just won a Cy Young, why wouldn’t you want to have him? He’s a tremendous pitcher, and wherever he goes, he’s going to bring a lot.”

Gomes has, in past episodes of The Fight Fan, talked about two other former teammates in Cleveland that are now Mets (that being Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco, of course) – and in discussing Bauer, he investigated the notion of the team asking Lindor or Carrasco about Bauer as some recon.

“I don’t know if the Mets are already there…I think Lindor will be one of the faces of the Mets, but I don’t know if they’ve already given him that much credit. Not that he doesn’t deserve it, but I don’t know if they’ve asked him if they should give someone 20 or 30 million dollars to come pitch.”

Hoff recalled how David Wright was a big factor in the Mets bringing in Michael Cuddyer years ago, and Gomes agreed that if Lindor ends up signing a long-term deal in Queens, he could be a similar influence.

“If anything, a year from now, if they give Lindor a major deal, yeah,” he said. “You just saw the Phillies, and it would’ve been wild if they didn’t bring Realmuto back, because you brought in Harper to build a team, and you have to have superstars to build around them.”

A function of the “unbelievable competition” that will be the NL East going forward, Gomes says.

“Even us (Washington) – we’re bringing in guys, because it’s going to be unbelievable competition in the NL East, so we’ve invested in our team and want to make sure we can put the best out there to compete.”
