BT ripped the Mets for their exhaustive marginal moves this offseason after acquiring Adrian Houser and Tyrone Taylor on Wednesday, but Sal says David Stearns and company are playing things smart, and should be praised for the moves they've made so far.
"What they're doing is building a solid foundation, because inevitably, when things go wrong…the weakness the Mets have had in the past is having zero depth. What Davis Stearns is doing is being smart and responsible, and waiting for the big fish to go get," Sal said. "Right now, they're building a foundation. It's easy to poke fun at…but they're smart moves. That is how you build a winning team."
Meanwhile, Sal says the Yankees so far have only focused on making the splashy move and short-term solution in trading five players for Juan Soto, a free agent at the end of next season. The Yanks may have made the big move, but the Mets are making the smart ones.
"They went all in for a rental player," Sal said. "The Yankees are trying to do this the wrong way. Sexy, splashy, yes. That's not the way you build a team. They still have Giancarlo Stanton, who can't run the bases. They still have DJ LeMahieu, who is always hurt. They still have Gleyber Torres, who has his head up his rear end half the season. They still have Carlos Rodon, who stinks…there's a lot of work to be done with the Yankees, and where's their depth?
"The Yankees are getting the headlines, but the Mets are building a solid team."
