In a surprise move on Thursday, the Yankees designated infielder/outfielder Miguel Andujar for assignment, ending years of trade rumors, speculation, and frustration for Andujar as he made frequent trips from Triple-A to the big leagues, and then back again.
Andujar, in sporadic playing time, posted an OPS of just .531 this season, but Boomer says the Mets should take a flier on the former Rookie of the Year candidate.
“If I were the Mets, I’d make sure I pick that guy up,” Boomer said.
Andujar would have been the 2018 Rookie of the Year had Shohei Ohtani not made his major-league debut the same season, batting .297 with 27 home runs and an .855 OPS. But a shoulder injury in 2019 led to just 12 games, and since 2018, has hit just .228 with eight home runs.
Given his track record since 2018, Gio is not in agreement with Boomer.
“One good season,” Gio said. “Never saw him again.”
