Could the Los Angeles Angels look to trade Mike Trout in order to keep pending unrestricted free-agent Shohei Ohtani?
It's a thought that Audacy MLB Insider Jon Heyman mentioned during his interview with Hugh Douglas and Joe Giglio on Monday's 94WIP Midday Show.
"The one thing I wonder about though, is would they trade Trout to try to make room [for Ohtani]?" Heyman said. "I'm just wondering if they would consider trading Trout. He obviously has no trade powers. Probably would only accept going to Philly or New York, but I think everything is on the table for this because I do think their whole goal is to keep Ohanti and unlike others, I'd give them a little bit of a chance to do that."
Phillies fans have been talking about bringing Trout to Philadelphia for years now, as the Millville, NJ native is openly a huge Philadelphia sports fan.
The 31-year-old center fielder is under contract through 2030, making $35.45 million each season. Of course, the Phils already have Bryce Harper and Trea Turner under long-term expensive contracts as well, with Harper's expiring after 2031 (average annual value of $24.5 million) and Turner's expiring after 2033 (average annual value of $27.2 million).
In 81 games this season, Trout is slashing .263/.369/.493 with 18 HR and 44 RBI in a down year for the 11-time All-Star and three-time AL MVP.
He is currently on the injured list after fracturing his left hand on July 4th.
