It is still uncertain what the 2021 MLB season will look like, but another proposal was sent out over the weekend.
According to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, MLB sent a proposal to the players' union on Friday that included a 154-game schedule with full pay and an expanded postseason.
The proposal would delay the start of the season by a month and extend the end of the season by a week. Spring training would start March 22 and Opening Day would be April 28 with the World Series pushed back to November, according to Buster Olney.
Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the universal DH is also included in the offer. However, RADIO.COM Sports MLB Insider Bob Nightengale reports the players are expected to formally reject the offer on Monday.
The MLBPA previously rejected an offer from the league that attached the universal DH to expanded playoffs.
According to Sherman, the players' union has pushed back against expanding playoffs due to concerns that if teams believe they can get into postseason by winning fewer games, there is less incentive for them to compete financially in free agency.
He also noted another suggestion that players feel that even if the season is shortened by eight games, it could hurt stats and value for 2022.
Last year, MLB expanded the playoff field to eight teams in each league due to the shortened 60 game season due to the pandemic.
According to Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal, MLB's current proposal calls for a 14-team postseason.
Players on social media have expressed desire to play a full 162-game season but COVID concerns continue to hang over the league. The NBA, for instance, has been forced to postpone nearly two dozen games.
It is not clear when MLB players would be vaccinated, but a delay to the season would at least buy some time to help prevent COVID from affecting it.
