Maybe Gio wasn't in the best of moods on Thursday morning after realizing how little excitement he had for Opening Day this year, but whatever the reason, that momentum turned into a frustration-filled segment where he looked back on the players he hated the most, but from his own favorite teams.
Sometimes, even when they're wearing your team's colors, you just can't bring yourself to root for them. Gio knows the feeling, as he rattled off a few names from years past that he just couldn't bring himself to like.
"There's certain guys on your own team that you really turn on," Gio said.
Leading off, Gio was never a fan of Mets outfielder Roger Cedeño, who had a productive 1999 season in New York before coming back for another Mets tenure in 2002. It was then that Gio quickly grew tired of him.
"You know who I couldn't stand, was Roger Cedeño," Gio said. "When he came back the second time, I thought he was just a terrible baseball player. I couldn't stand Roger Cedeño."
What about Gio's Knicks? Boomer brought up Carmelo Anthony, but Gio didn't share that disdain, instead pointing to Jerome James, who played 90 games in four miserable seasons for the Knicks, averaging 2.5 points per game from 2005-09 after signing a five-year deal worth nearly $30 million, easily one of the worst contracts in the history of a franchise that has plenty to choose from.
"The Knicks…I didn't like Carmelo, but that's a tough one to be my least favorite of all time," Gio said. "Maybe Jerome James? They gave him that big contract and he just took all the money and blew up."
Gio brought up two names from his Minnesota Vikings, and the first might surprise you.
"Adrian Peterson was not one of my favorite Vikings," Gio said. I didn't like him at all…just drove me nuts. You can't have the running back be the best player. That was my whole issue. All this stuff was happening, and it meant nothing.
"Another guy I couldn't stand, was a cornerback named Wasswa Serwanga. He was one of the worst players imaginable. He got torched in that 2000 NFC Championship Game."
Serwanga was among the Minnesota defenders who were torched by the Giants in that 41-0 blowout, so some understandable frustration from Gio.
Boomer chipped in a few names from rival teams that he could never stand, like Alex Ovechkin and Chase Utley. As for from his own team, he was never a fan of Rangers winger Nikolai Zherdev, who tied for the team lead in points back in 2008-09 before suddenly being allowed to become an unrestricted free agent after only one season.
