Gio was in high spirits on Tuesday, after his temporary favorite team in the Celtics finished off a sweep of his hated Nets on Monday night, silencing the contingent of Brooklyn fans that were convinced the turbulent regular season would give way to a title run behind Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
Instead, Brooklyn heads into the offseason still boasting just one playoff series win since bringing in its star-studded duo of Durant and Irving, and after a season filled with vaccination controversy, a James Harden trade, and constant monotonous Ben Simmons injury updates, the Nets head home mired in disappointment.
Despite all of those narratives, Mark in Brooklyn thought Boomer and Gio were being too hard on the team. He had no idea what he was in for.
"Stop with the Nets," Mark pleaded when he called into Tuesday's show. "Come on, give us a break. We know we stunk…everything with the Nets, come on."
Gio found the idea of easing up on the Nets to be hysterical, especially given the shy-high expectations they came into the season with back in October.
"You want us just come on the air and be like, 'You know, for guys like Mark in Brooklyn, we're gonna be a little light on the Nets today,'" Gio said.
"Just because you're a Nets fan and you don't like the way it sounds, suck it up. Your team sucks! You can't handle the truth. The truth is your team is a disaster."
Mark, a former Knicks fan before the Nets moved to Brooklyn, then went after Gio for his Knicks fandom.
"You guys are watching us this year. So how can you bash us?" Mark said.
"Not anymore we're not, because you got swept, and this is one of the biggest disasters in New York sports history," Gio replied.
"This is sports. I'm gonna celebrate the teams I hate, and I hate the Nets. I'm dancing on your grave. Deal with it."
Even Boomer got in on the fun, rejoicing in Brooklyn's early exit.
"You guys only played five more games," Boomer said in reference to the 'Bockers. "They don't hang play-in banners in the rafters, do they?"
