Kyrie Irving fined $50,000 for giving Boston Celtics fans middle finger in Nets playoff opener

A fine for Kyrie Irving was expected after he gave the TD Garden crowd the finger during the Nets’ series-opening loss to the Celtics on Sunday, and on Tuesday, that fine was delivered.

The NBA announced Tuesday afternoon that Irving has been fined $50,000 for “making obscene gestures on the playing court and directing profane language towards the spectator stands,” which he commented on after the game.

"Where I’m from, I’m used to all these antics and people being close, nearby. It’s nothing new when I come to this building what it’s going to be like," Irving said. "It's the same energy they have for me and I’m going to have the same energy for them. I don’t want to attack every Boston fan, but when people start yelling p***y, bitch, and f**k you there’s only so much you can take as a competitor.”

Irving has always been a villain in Boston since leaving the Celtics after signing with the Nets, and that has been kicked up another few notches after that gesture to the Boston crowd. Now, his wallet is a few notches lighter.
