DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Just one day after 13-year Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle resigned his position with the organization, reports have surfaced that the Mavs owner Mark Cuban, and a group of 'trusted advisors' have already begun talks on finding Carlisle's replacement.
Per ESPN's Tim MacMahon, that group, which includes Mavs legend Dirk Nowitzki, vice president of basketball operations Michael Finley, and others, have 'briefly' discussed the idea of former Mavs point guard, Jason Kidd, for the role.
However, according MacMahon's report Mark Cuban also made it clear in that meeting that finding a new general manager and president of basketball operations to replace Donnie Nelson would be the team's first and immediate priority.
Kidd, who has a somewhat sordid history around the league with various franchises, has previous, albeit less than stellar, experience as a head coach thus far.
Kidd began that career with the Brooklyn Nets, where he went 44-38 in his only season, finished second in the Atlantic Division, and lost in the second round of the NBA playoffs.
That offseason the Milwaukee Bucks then traded two second round picks to the Nets for the coaching rights to Kidd, where he would spending the next four seasons.
During that time, Kidd's record was 139-152, while his teams finished with a record above .500 just once, and failing to win a single playoff series.
Kidd was subsequently fired as the Bucks head coach after a 23-22 start to the 2017-18 season, where he would eventually be replaced by Mike Budenholzer.
Since 2019, Kidd has served as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, helping his team to the 2019-2020 NBA title.
