The Nets have officially locked up superstar Kevin Durant on a massive four-year contract extension, and the team still has a pair of other superstars that the team hopes to keep in Brooklyn for years to come.
Durant, the most prolific star of the three, averaged over 35 points in the team’s second round exit this past postseason, which could have gone much differently had his fellow stars been healthy.
Durant clearly had no signs of lingering effects of his Achilles injury that he suffered just before initially signing with the Nets, and general manager Sean Marks is expectedly thrilled that Durant will continue his prime years in Brooklyn.
“From a peace of mind standpoint, just putting that aside, it was obviously very important for us,” Marks said. “I can’t tell you how important it was. This is franchise-changing, when you can lock a person like Kevin up and he wants to commit to being here for the foreseeable future.”
Now, Marks’ attention turns toward locking up Harden and Irving, and he told reporters that he has been in discussions with both about following Durant’s footsteps and signing an extension.
“We’re having those conversations with them now,” Marks said. “I think there’s no immediate hurry to get any of these guys done in terms of the first day of free agency.”
Marks is confident that both Harden and Irving will be locked up with contract extensions by the start of training camp. Irving signed a four-year deal with Brooklyn in July of 2019, when Durant signed his first deal with the Nets, while Harden’s contract, which he signed with the Rockets, runs through the 2022-23 season.
“I feel very confident that the first day of training camp, we’ll be looking at those three in particular being signed, sealed, and delivered, and being part of the Brooklyn Nets for a long time to come,” Marks said.
