Kyrie Irving’s name has been swirling in trade rumors since Kevin Durant reportedly requested to be dealt out of Brooklyn, with recent reports suggesting Irving would want to be reunited with LeBron James in Los Angeles, and that the Nets were holding off on dealing Irving until a Durant trade was completed.
But could Irving want to stay in Brooklyn, regardless of what happens with his fellow superstar?
According to Brian Lewis of the New York Post, Irving “never asked for a trade” from the Nets, and has “every intention of playing for the Nets,” regardless if Durant remains with the team or not.
Irving opted in to his one-year, $36.5 million for next season, and Durant requested a trade almost immediately after, on the three-year anniversary of the two signing with Brooklyn to form their own superteam. But only one playoff series win has happened since, and Durant reportedly wants to move on.
Many reported that Irving would likely be on the move as well, even saying that the two would be open to continuing to play together, just not on the Nets. But Lewis’ report suggest Irving could be staying put near his hometown in New Jersey, which would still give Brooklyn a star to build around, though one who hasn’t shown an ability or willingness to be on the court for a full season since joining Brooklyn.
