DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie is opting out of the final year of his deal worth $12.3 million and will hit the free-agent market this summer.
Dinwiddie suffered a season-ending partially torn ACL in his right knee three games into the regular season. According to a report from Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News, Dinwiddie has now recovered from the injury and was preparing for a return during the NBA Finals had Brooklyn made it.
In his report, Winfield noted that one of the teams who has an interest in the 28-year-old combo guard's services is the Dallas Mavericks.
However, they'll have a lot of competition as he'll reportedly be "one of the more coveted players in free agency."
Dinwiddie reportedly has his eye on a return to his hometown of Los Angeles but also wants to cash in after coming off of a team-friendly three-year, $34 million contract.
“Home is the preferred destination,” the source told The Daily News. “But he wants to secure his financial future, too.”
In 64 games in 2019-20, Dinwiddie averaged 20.6 points on 41% shooting from the field and just over 30% shooting from three-point range.
For the Mavs, it's difficult to see how they can make a play for his services should they stick behind their desire to bring back Tim Hardaway Jr. this offseason. Hardaway is expected to command a salary north of $20 million per season, and when you combine that with the likelihood of Josh Richardson opting into the final year of his contract worth over $11 million, and the Mavs are left well short of being able to afford a player as talented as Dinwiddie.
