Are you a Knicks fan worried about how Derrick Rose’s arrival will negatively affect Immanuel Quickley?
No need, says RADIO.COM Sports NBA insider Brian Scalabrine, who is actually an advocate of getting
“Let’s get right down to the controversy: I think it’s really good to develop and earn your time as a young player. Having things given to you is never good,” Scalabrine said. “I like Quickley a lot, and I think he’s earned his time out there – and I think that he and Derrick Rose, both being big guards, can play together.”
Rose and Quickley playing heavy minutes together isn’t something Scal would advocate as a full-time, daily game plan, but if the situation calls for it, that’s definitely an option.
“Quickley should be playing 18-25 minutes, and Rose…it you staggered their minutes throughout the first three quarters, and then at the end both guys have it going, why not play them together?” Scalabrine asked. “Both guys can guard bigger guys, so I can see that happening in the fourth quarter.”
Rose is a former MVP with a less-than-stellar rep in some ways, but Scalabrine
“Rose was great with mentoring Killian Hayes in Detroit and coming off the bench, and he’s a guy who has had to transition his style,” Scalabrine said. “I played with him in Chicago when he won the MVP, and Derrick was pedal to the metal every time he went out there – but as he started to develop and he got hurt, he realized he had lost some athleticism. (Quickley) learning how to win the mental game from a guy who won the MVP one way and has transitioned his game to a different style could be huge.”
Rose can also help Quickley further develop his signature floater, which Scalabrine called one of the Top 20 or so in the NBA, and also how to option out of that.
“Rose can teach him how important it is to avoid contact, and how to throw passes out of the pick-and-roll, what we call those pocket passes,” Scalabrine opined.
And maybe, just maybe, Rose can help Quickley develop by helping the Knicks get him into some bigger games later this year.
“I think the Knicks would benefit from making the playoffs and playing meaningful games,” Scalabrine said. “That really helps you project forward how good your young players are going to be, as opposed to just regular-season stats.”
