Sean Marks and the Nets have complete the teardown of their superstar trio in Brooklyn, as Kevin Durant represented the last piece of a star-studded group that was expected to bring multiple titles to the borough.
Instead, after just one playoff series win, they’re all gone.
So, what is Marks’ message to fans, particularly the season ticket holders who renewed for this season, expecting to see Durant and Kyrie Irving make a push for a championship?
“That's honestly tough,” Marks said. But my goal here, and our goal from ownership all the way down is to put something out on the floor that everybody can be proud of. You can see consistent effort, availability, competitive spirit, and everyone playing a great brand of basketball. With this group of young men, you will certainly see that.”
Irving has recently voiced his displeasure with the Nets front office, but he was under contract through the rest of this season, and Durant was for another three seasons, so Brooklyn could have kept them both around to try and make one last championship push. Instead, they elected on another rebuild, one that Marks hopes will eventually find the success that the team’s big free agent stars never did.
“As they grow and as they get some sort of continuity with each other, and also playing under JV’s style, I think it’s a perfect fit,” Marks said. “I think we’ve all seen what JV’s been able to do. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
