There is an increased security presence around Barclays Center tonight, thanks to the events of this morning at Brooklyn’s 36th Street subway station that left more than a dozen injured.
Kevin Durant spoke about the tragedy during the Nets’ morning practice, and just prior to the game, head coach Steve Nash weighed in.
“I haven’t talked to anybody about it, other than out coaches, but clearly, our community was affected this morning in a tragic and unfortunate senseless way,” Nash said. “You feel for those affected, and recognize we have a lot of growing to do as a society.”
As Nash noted, that is the stop that services the team’s HSS Training Center on 39th Street and 2nd Avenue, and his children attend school in the neighborhood, so it hit particularly close to home.
“It does hit home…we saw a side of life today that is ugly, disappointing, and can be worrisome,” Nash said. “It’s more important now for our community to look at how to support each other, and continue to live with conviction and find ways we can overcome.”
Durant had said Tuesday morning that he was warned ahead of time by staff to prepare for extra traffic, and found out about the incident on social media. The Nets later released a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and their loved ones, and warned fans attending tonight’s Nets-Cavs Play-In Game to “arrive early and expect an increased security presence at Barclays Center.”
