Mike Francesa Reacts To Bryce Harper Signing With Phillies

By WFAN.com

Bryce Harper has finally made up his mind.

According to WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, Harper has agreed to a 13-year $330 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. The massive deal becomes the most expensive in baseball history as it eclipses the $325 million contract Giancarlo Stanton signed with the Miami Marlins a few years ago.

On Thursday, Mike Francesa began his show with his reaction to the news that the league's most sought after free agent had finally signed with a team.

"Harper could've signed a deal with the Phillies a long time ago," said Francesa. "He was holding out for somebody else. He wasn't thrilled about going to the Phillies ... but finally he goes there. He gets a contract that is very long ... 13 years, no opt-out. 13 years he's not gonna see."

Harper's numbers were down slightly in 2018. In his final season with the Washington Nationals he hit just .249 with 34 home runs and 100 RBIs. Over his career he has hit .279 with 184 home runs and 521 RBIs. The 26-year-old has made the All-Star team six times. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 2012, and was Major League Baseball's MVP in 2015.

According to Heyman, the deal has no opt-outs. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, it also contains a no-trade clause. If all goes according to plan, Harper will be under contract with the Phillies until 2031.

Harper's decision keeps him in the NL East, which means the Mets will still see his bat quite a bit in 2019. Harper also had interest from the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Francesa noted that he would be more concerned on behalf of Mets fans if the Phillies had used that money to bolster their pitching instead of their hitting.

"Harper to the Phillies. What does that mean for the division? I gotta be honest with you, I'd be more concerned if the Phillies bettered their pitching than if they bettered their lineup. Is he gonna hit home runs in that park? Heck yeah. Absolutely. He's gonna hit home runs anywhere ... that goes without saying."
