NYC Mayor suggests changes to private sector mandate are still far off, if ever: 'We're not there yet'

Opening Day is just weeks away for the Yankees and Mets, and the NBA playoffs are also nearing for Kyrie Irving and the Nets.

Which means the clock is ticking on a change in the city's private sector mandate for COVID-19 vaccinations, and if nothing changes by next month, unvaccinated Yankees and Mets players will not be allowed to play in home games, and Irving will continue to be unable to play in home games at the Barclays Center.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday morning, New York City mayor Eric Adams made it seem that a change in the current mandate isn't coming any time soon, if at all.

"Right now, we're gonna take some complaints. But when this is all said and done, people are going to realize that this is a thoughtful administration, and we got it right," Adams said. "Baseball, basketball, businesses, all of those things, they have to wait until that layer comes."

Adams did announce a change in some of the City's mandates, revealing that masks for kids 2-4 years old in schools and day care will now be optional, but as for the mandate that prevents unvaccinated professional athletes from playing in home games, while visiting players are still allowed to play, that doesn't appear to be going away, which could drastically impact the Yankees and Mets' seasons, as well as Brooklyn's NBA title hopes.

"Believe it or not, a lot of our businesses love the mandates…getting people back in the office, that mandate allowing them to feel safe in the office for those who feel that they would rather the vaccine mandate to be in place," Adams said. "Again, we're gonna do it in layers. When we feel that it's the right time to look at that, if we do so at all, because the work environment is an important environment, we're going to make that determination. We're not there yet."
