Friday night’s Women’s Final Four matchup between the University of Connecticut and Stanford at Target Center will feel much more like a Connecticut home game than a national semifinal on a neutral court.
With Hopkins native Paige Bueckers, reigning National Player of the Year, returning home to Minnesota with her Connecticut team, ticket demand and prices have skyrocketed. Following the Huskies dramatic double overtime win in the Elite Eight on Monday, ticket sales for the Final Four jumped nearly 50 percent over the next 24 hours.
“This is unique compared to prior years,” StubHub spokesperson Mike Silveira said. “This year is about 40 percent more sales than in 2019. This is certainly a unique spike in demand.”
Silveira says Bueckers is to credit for that, along with the Connecticut and Stanford matchup, which has become a rivalry over the last several years.
The crowd is also expected to be overwhelmingly Minnesotan. While the Women’s Final Four is historically a national event that attracts fans from all over the country, more than 50 percent of ticket purchases for this year’s event have been from Minnesotans, Silveira said.
As of Thursday afternoon, there were only 500 tickets left for the Final Four session on Friday. The average ticket price is $171.
“This is certainly more activity than we’d typically see,” Silveira said.
