Perhaps a familiar face may become available as an option for the depleted Yankees bullpen?
The Texas Rangers designated RHP Albert Abreu for assignment on Monday, one of a slew of roster moves that also saw another ex-Yankees prospect, Josh Smith, be promoted from Triple-A.
Abreu, 26, was dealt to Texas for catcher Jose Trevino in early April. Abreu had a 3.12 ERA in 8 2/3 innings this year, but control problems continued to plague him, as he had a 1.846 WHIP and 12 walks against nine strikeouts.
The righty entered 2022 out of minor-league options, so he must clear waivers for the Rangers to be able to send him to Triple-A Round Rock. He also has less than a year of service time entering 2022, so any team that claims him could have five-plus years of team control, and would only owe him the pro-rated portion of his $707,500 salary.
Smith, 24, was the Yankees’ second-round pick in 2019, and was dealt to Texas last season in the Joey Gallo trade. A shortstop by trade, Smith has played short, third, and center field this season in Triple-A, where he was slashing .273/.382/.422 with four homers, 29 RBI, eight steals, and 24 walks.
