Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant didn't like what he saw from Pittsburgh's Jeff Carter when he collided with Igor Shesterkin late in game two on Thursday night, and Gio didn't like it either.
"It did look like he was trying to physically harm him, like you would be prone to do in a playoff series, but it seemed like it was a little much, quite frankly," Gio said during Friday's show. "I was glad he was called for the penalty and Shesterkin ended up being OK, because that would have been the cheap shot of all cheap shots to try to get the soon-to-be Vezina Trophy winner out of the series."
But Gio did add then upon watching the replay, it seems like Shesterkin going airborne and crashing to the ice, then lying motionless for several moments, seemed like it may have been exaggerated.
"In real time it doesn't look like he's flopping," Gio said. "In slow motion, it looks like he's flopping.
"Penguins fans are gonna see that and be like 'Shesterkin's gotta get out of the way,' and Rangers fans will say they're trying to take Shesterkin out of the series."
Boomer thought the collision may have been an attempt to send a message to the Rangers, who had the game well in hand when the incident occurred. But he expects a lot more physicality the rest of the way.
"It's on, baby, like they say," Boomer said. "It's playoff hockey. We've got guys hurt on both teams already, guys hitting each other. This is what playoff hockey is supposed to be."
