When the Rangers reached the Eastern Conference Final for the first time in seven years with a win in game seven on Monday, the win also meant the team lost something as a result: its first-round draft pick, which now goes to the Winnipeg Jets as the conditional pick included in the Andrew Copp trade.
When Blueshirts president and general manager Chris Drury came down to the visiting locker room at PNC Arena after his team finished off a blowout win in game seven, Copp made sure to tease him about losing the pick.
“I did come down after the game [Monday],” Drury told reporters on Tuesday. “I was going around seeing the players, and Copper looked up at me and said ‘Sorry about your first,’ which is no problem at all.”
With New York reaching the conference final and Copp playing in more than half of the Rangers games, the pick going to the Jets is now a first rounder, which Drury obviously cares very little about, especially with how much Copp and his other trade deadline acquisitions have meant to the team.
“We’re certainly thrilled to have them all,” Drury said of his midseason additions that now have the Rangers on the cusp of a Stanley Cup berth.
