With Friday’s win over the Lightning in game two, the Rangers did something no other team in the NHL has been able to do in the last three years.

The Blueshirts took down Tampa twice in a row, marking the two-time defending champions’ first playoff losing streak since its shocking sweep at the hands of the Blue Jackets in 2019.

Before game two, the Lightning had won 18 straight postseason games following a loss, which was the longest streak in the history of any of the four major sports. It was a major talking point heading into game two at The Garden (something Boomer quickly grew sick of), but New York showed stats only matter until they’re no longer a trend.

But with the Rangers’ 3-1 victory, they continued a trend of their own, having now won eight straight postseason games on their home ice, which ties a franchise record set way back in 1941.

New York could look to break that record later in the playoffs, but they hope they won’t have a chance to do that until the Stanley Cup Final. They’d rather win the next two and finish off the Lightning in game four in Tampa.
