Rangers trade Jacob Trouba to Anaheim for defenseman and 2025 draft pick

The Jacob Trouba era is over on Broadway.

The Rangers announced Friday that they have traded Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

“I want to sincerely thank Jacob for his contributions to the Rangers and our community,” GM Chris Drury said in a team statement announcing the move. “Jacob has been an example on and off the ice for our organization and played a major role in our success over the last several years. Since coming to New York five years ago, and serving as Captain for the last three seasons, he has demonstrated grit, toughness, and tremendous leadership and we can’t thank Jacob enough for everything he has done for the Rangers.”

Trouba played parts of six seasons for the Rangers, serving as Captain for three of them, and had 31 goals and 105 assists in 364 games. He won the Rod Gilbert “Mr. Ranger” Award in 2022-23, but things between him and the team started going south late last year, and on Friday, reached a head when the team announced he would be inactive for tonight’s game for ‘roster management’ reasons, and defenseman Victor Mancini was recalled from AHL Hartford to fill in.

Vaakanainen, 25, has one assist in give games this season, but he had one goal, 13 assists, and 79 blocked shots in 68 games last season. He was originally the No. 18 pick by Boston in the 2017 NHL Draft.
