Getting to know Jordan Hicks
In one of the most stunning trades in franchise history, the Boston Red Sox have traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, per a major league source. FanSided's Robert Murray was first to report the deal.
The Red Sox' return in the trade will include pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, along with a pair of minor leaguers - the Giants' No. 4 overall prospect James Tibbs and Jose Bello. Tibbs - a corner outfielder and first baseman- was San Francisco's first-round pick in last year's MLB Draft (13th overall), while the 20-year-old Bello is a pitcher currently pitching in Rookie League.
The Red Sox confirmed the trade in a press release Sunday night.
Devers is signed through 2033 after inking a 10-year, $313.5 million extension prior to last season.
The Red Sox' impetus for moving on from Devers stemmed from the 28-year-old's unwillingness to provide an option at first base despite requests from the team to do so.
Devers hit his 15th home run of the season in the Red Sox' 2-0 win over the Yankees Sunday, and currently boasts an OPS of .905.
Harrison has long been considered a potential top of the rotation starter for the Giants, having made 24 starts for San Francisco in his first full season in the majors last year, finishing with an ERA of 4.56. This season the 23-year-old lefty began the season in Triple-A before being promoted in early May.
After initially starting his stint back with the Giants in the bullpen, Harrison was reintroduced to the rotation on May 24. In his four starts since, the lefty has shown mixed results (4.91 ERA in 18 1/3 innings.)
Hicks is a hard-thrower whom the Red Sox attempted to sign prior to last season to be a starter. The righty chose the Giants' deal of four years, $44 million. He recently was removed from the starting rotation after a poor run to begin 2024, compiling an ERA of 6.55 as a starting pitcher.
