I ended last Sunday's WFAN show with a very brief discussion of how I feel Major League Baseball can go back and make the game fun for the next generation of fans and players, and I wanted to continue that conversation in more depth on this AM's show.
I know it depends on where you live, and in what part of the country, but in general, over the last 15-20 years or so, lots of research shows that fewer and fewer kids are being attracted to playing baseball.
Now, there are all sorts of explanations…the gaining popularity of other spring sports like lax, the explosive growth of video games, pro football and basketball do a better job at marketing their games, and on and on. The bottom line is that baseball continues to lose more and more of its appeal to the next generation of athletes.
What's my take? As a lifelong baseball fan, I'm worried that the game is no longer being played in an exciting way at the big league level – and even worse, the kids are not being exposed to how the game can and should be played. The bottom line is that the game has become, quite frankly, boring.
I present my own theory as to where the National Pastime has gone off the tracks, and I also try to present a way to get it back. The calls on the show were all excellent this AM. Please take a listen to the podcast of the show below and let me know what you think:
