How do I know that HS sports are finally coming back to life in this country?
Simple. Because I've been receiving a steadily increasing number of emails in the last few weeks from sports parents who are focusing on what I call the so-called "traditional concerns" of competitive youth and HS sports.
That is, after pretty much a year off from complaints due to the pandemic, I'm suddenly seeing a number of emails and texts like:
-My kid plays for an insensitive HS coach….this guy is a real Neanderthal…what can I do to help my kid?
-My youngster is viewed by everyone among his peers as a top athlete – everyone except his travel team coach – what can he do to get the coach to change his opinion and get more playing time?
-My kid lost a vital year in terms of being recruited for college….shouldn't his high school athletic department be doing more to help get the word out about him to college coaches?
In other words, these are the kind of questions I have received from concerned parents for years and years. And I imagine that even more of these kinds of questions will be coming my way this spring as sports return to full action.
So, I have an open-ended question for you all this AM:
Now that it seems that sports – fingers crossed – are finally coming back, as coaches and parents – does this mean we are just going to return to the youth sports nuttiness that we left a year ago?
