Two Scarlet Knights named to NCAA Football Award watch lists

WFAN is the new home of Rutgers football starting this fall, and when the season opens at Boston College on Sept. 3, there will be a couple of award watch list players on the field for the Scarlet Knights.

As announced earlier this week by both entities, wide receiver Aron Cruickshank landed on the Paul Hornung Award watch list, an award given to "the most versatile player in major college football" by the Louisville Sports Commission, while punter Adam Korsak is on the Ray Guy Award watch list (given to the nation's top punter by the Augusta Sports Council) for the fifth consecutive season.

Korsak was First-Team All-Big Ten and a Second-Team AP All-American last season thanks to a 45.25-yard net punting average, which set a new NCAA record, and he was one of the finalists for the Ray Guy Award last season, marking the first time a Scarlet Knight finished Top 3 for a national on-field award since 2007.

Korsak is a consensus preseason All-American heading into 2022, and will once again be one of the favorites for the award if he follows up on a 2021 where he had 65 zero- or negative-yard returns out of 72 punts (with no touchbacks, a streak that is up to 124 consecutive boots) and a school-record 45.8-yard gross average.

He also enters 2022 as the Rutgers all-time leader in career punts (274) and punting yards (12,021).

Cruickshank, who was on the Hornung Award watch list in 2021 as well, enters 2022 with 3,129 career all-purpose yards (2,194 kickoff return, 523 receiving yards, 245 rushing yards, 167 punt return yards) in 43 games.

He was second on the Scarlet Knights last year with 743 all-purpose yards (316 kickoff return, 244 receiving, 153 punt return, 30 rushing) in seven games, and in the past was named the Big Ten Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year and honorable mention All-America by Phil Steele in 2020.
