Sal rips NBA's new 'made-up, bullcrap' in-season tournament

The NBA announced its expected midseason tournament on Wednesday, revealing that it will begin in the upcoming season, completing commissioner Adam Silver’s quest to adopt an in-season tournament like soccer leagues do overseas.

The gist of the tournament is pool play during regular season games before a final four in Las Vegas, where the champion will receive a trophy, and each player from the winning squad will be awarded $500,000, as the league tries to find a benchmark to draw more viewers during the sometimes monotonous 82-game regular season.

It’s not an idea that Sal is very excited about.

“What’s the point of it?” Sal said. “It’s just a random tournament that you’re adding in the middle of the regular season for no purpose?

“That is the dumbest thing I ever heard in my life.”

Sal hated the World Baseball Classic, and he doesn’t seem too excited about this tournament. He acknowledges the incentive for the players given the substantial cash prize, but why should he, as a viewer, care himself?

“I would venture to say I won’t even watch this crap,” Sal said. “This made-up, bullcrap tournament. Adam Silver is a smart guy, there has to be more to this. They can’t just be making up a tournament.

“What’s the payoff? What do I get? Why am I watching?”
