On my weekly WFAN Sports Edge show this AM, I discussed some vitally important topics for new sports parents and volunteer youth coaches.
This is a topic that we too often take for granted in youth sports, but this is most essential material. Because it really sets the tone for our kids as they are first introduced into sports.
In short, I wanted to give especially first-time sports parents a brief primer on everything from what's the right age to introduce your kids into organized sports, to allowing them to experiment with a variety of sports, to pinpointing which individual sports they should be introduced to a young age, to understanding why kids don't need to worry about keeping score until they're at least 8 or 9, to understading why specializing in one sport could backfire on a kid, how to learn the rules of each sport they play, and a whole bunch more.
And above all, why as a sports parent, you need to be patient and even more patient as they learn the skills of each sport, and to always be there to offer praise and support. Take a few moments to listen to this podcast. You might find it helpful.
