The Mets dealt away James McCann to the Orioles late Wednesday night, with Baltimore taking on only $5 million of the veteran catcher's deal after a failed tenure in New York.
McCann was signed just one month after Steve Cohen completed his purchase of the team, and McCann's departure now comes after Cohen spent roughly $800 million on his roster this offseason.
By eating the bulk of McCann's deal, Boomer says it is another shining example of Cohen's relentless commitment to building a winner in Queens.
"This is why you love the owner Steve Cohen," Boomer said. "Not only does he spend money on players, he realizes when he doesn't spend money the right way. He's willing to cut bait and cut loose those players. The first example of that was Robinson Cano of course. They bought out the remainder of his contract...now with this trade of James McCann.
"Steve Cohen, just to get rid of a player, is paying $19 million to clear his roster of a spot."
Not only does it show Cohen's dedication, but it casts some doubt across town that the Yankees would be willing to do the same, considering they are sticking with the contracts of Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks as they fail to find trade suitors.
"We have a guy that is all in financially," Boomer said. "The disparity, the difference between what he is for the Met fan and for the ownership of the Mets comparted to what the Yankees have devolved into is stark in its differences."
It certainly is interesting times in New York, as the Mets have now assumed the label of the win-at-all-costs team, while the Yankees are being perceived as a team much less willing to eat money for the sake of ending a title drought. There is a clear opportunity to do just that, but as of right now, the Bombers aren't jumping at the chance.
"There are two players right now that Brian Cashman is desperate to get rid of, and he very well may end up getting rid of them," Gio said. "But he could have already done that if ownership with the Yankees…operated like Steve Cohen did.
"They could flat-out cut Josh Donaldson or Aaron Hicks, and they're not gonna do that because of the financial situation. Or they could trade Josh Donaldson to a small-market team, pay 90 percent of the contract just to get him out of here and free up a spot, and they're not gonna do that either. We know the Yankees have the second highest payroll in baseball. But the way they're operating, it doesn't feel like it."
