Tiki Barber is moving to the afternoon show with Evan Roberts, and the reality is still setting in for the former NFL star who has carved out a radio career that he never imagined would exist.
“It’s been a long journey, man,” Tiki said while discussing his new role with Craig and Evan on Tuesday. “I remember listening to the FAN on my way home, getting pissed off at Mike [Francesa] because he was saying whatever about me during those years. As I moved on to my media career, radio was never really on my radar…but I found my voice doing radio.”
So, the new afternoon show, which Tiki revealed will be named “Evan and Tiki,” will begin on July 24, but first, Tiki gave his emotional thanks to his current midday co-host, Brandon Tierney, who has been alongside Tiki since their days on national radio.
“I would never have been able to do national, and certainly not local radio, had it not been for Brandon Tierney,” Tiki said. “I knew football well…but I couldn’t talk baseball. Basketball, I watched a little, but I didn’t know it. Brandon literally taught me baseball. I didn’t play it as a kid, I didn’t have a feel for it…slowly but surely, with BT, I learned to have that conversation. While I feel blessed to be getting this opportunity to be on the afternoons at WFAN…it is bittersweet for me. Brandon became a brother over those years. I hate we’re not going together, but opportunities present themselves, and they’re rarely ever perfect. You have to be ready and willing to take them, even if it’s painful sometimes.
“I thank you, Brandon. I really do. Because my career would not have had any chance of being real if I had been with someone who didn’t care.”
