Vin Scully has picked up a new hobby since retiring from the broadcast booth: social media.

While most his age aren’t very internet-savvy, the 92-year-old Scully isn’t just dipping his toes in the water – as of Wednesday, he launched both an Instagram page and a Twitter account at the handle @TheVinScully, and according to the Los Angeles Times, there are plans for a Facebook page in October, as well as future potential for a YouTube channel and website.

In his column about Scully’s new ventures, Bill Plaschke noted that Scully’s desire to join cyberspace stems from missing the fans of Los Angeles and around the world – a notion anyone can understand in this COVID-gripped world, but especially Scully, who has been confined to his home for most of the summer after falling in his driveway and ending up in the hospital.

“It was like, ‘Hey, you’ve had a good life, but be ready pal, it’s just around the corner,’” Scully told Plaschke of the fall that left him with a concussion, broken nose, and three fractured ribs.

But now, thanks to a friend, he’s headed to the interwebs to re-forge the bond he has missed since retiring at the end of 2016, finishing a broadcast journey that began at Fordham, moved across the country with baseball, and ended seven decades later in the broadcast booth at Chavez Ravine.

“I was told the fans would like to talk to me, and I said, well, that would be very nice,” Scully said. “I don’t know what I’m getting into, really!”

And already, several heavy hitters from all walks of sports, entertainment, and life have weighed in on Scully’s entry to the Twitterverse.
