So, could Craig Carton have BEEN Joey Styles a quarter-century ago, or could he have just REPLACED Joey Styles as the lead announcer for Extreme Championship Wrestling?
In case you missed it on Wednesday, Craig told the following story about how he almost worked for Paul Heyman and ECW back in the mid-1990s when he was at WIP in Philadelphia:
As Craig then said Thursday: “This became a big thing among wrestling fans, and hardcore ECW fans think I’m full of crap, so they reached out to (ECW owner) Paul Heyman,” Craig said. “So Heyman came out and said he was calling BS, and everyone said I was making it up.”
That would be this Tweet, right here:
Craig’s response?
“First off, why would I make anything up about something from 1994, with a wrestling company I know nothing off, and a name I heard once?” Craig asked. “(Heyman) confirmed what I said in part, and denied it in part; he admits they needed a replacement for Joey Styles that summer – exactly what I said – but ultimately, they hired someone else to do it.”
And as it turns out, maybe both sides of the story were right?
“He denies that the name I was going to be was Joey Styles; the guy who was Joey Styles, Joe Bonsignore, already had that name,” Craig said. “Well, Joey reached out to some people and apparently said that he would not be surprised if they kept the name – so maybe there’s a chance when I was contacted to be Joey Styles, they meant replace him, not be him.”
Craig is rarely wrong, and definitely isn’t the mea culpa type when he is, so the above quote from him is as close to one as you’ll get – but hey, it is indeed true overall that Craig Carton could’ve been the voice of ECW.
Craig, Evan, let’s get back to you in the studio!
