Boomer and Gio don’t share the interest in the World Baseball Classic like other fans around the globe, but Gio acknowledges the widespread interest, and wonders if it is creating a problem for Major League Baseball.

The problem being that its own players vocally expressed how much the WBC meant to them, and seemingly showed more emotional investment in over the past two weeks than during a 162-game season when playing for the teams who pay them.

“You really do come to the realization…that we care more about the championships than they do,” Gio said, from the perspective of the fan. “If they don’t win, they’re still getting paid a lot of money to play, and their lives are great. A lot of it are giving their all, but there’s some players that flat-out say they’re playing for the money. And I don’t blame them! Take care of yourself, take care of your family, take care of your chickens.

“When we’re going nuts about the WBC and saying ‘I can’t believe these guys care so much about this.’ Well, this is not just a reality with the WBC, it’s a reality across pro sports. We care more than they do!”

Now, after the WBC came to a thrilling finish, Opening Day is just over a week away, and Gio wonders if the players that participated in the global event will have the same drive and passion as they showed representing their country during the month of March.

“It is a bit of a problem for Major League Baseball that there is so much interest in this,” Gio said. “And not as much interest in the regular season.”
