So Booms invited Craiggy onto Boomer & Gio Wednesday, and Gio admonished our web guy Chicken Parm Lou for not trying to start trouble, so we have to admit: that whole WFAN show war thing?
Yeah, just a narrative for some buzz...or was it?
"It's funny how some people seem so invested in how there's going to be discontent between us and a war. I bought into it, we all bought into it, because it's fun!" Craig revealed in joining B&G from the Mike Francesa Studio (or, as Gio wanted to make it, the Carton & Roberts Studio) on Wednesday. "I'm doing an interview with a major radio publication today, and it's specifically because they want to ask about the pending war between our shows!"
We're gonna roll with it as long as some buy in (CPL, the former WWE employee, tells us that's called 'kayfabe' in the biz), but indeed, it was nothing but love between the former partners, with Boomer complimenting Craig on the first week of the new Carton & Roberts Show.
"I really thought it was awesome. It was great to be back," Craig said. "Selfishly, it was great to be back and be part of the radio station. Now, we have to do a show every day and we have to do it well, and so far it's been well received."
As Boomer noted, and anyone who has listened to the first week and change can attest, Craig hasn't lost his fastball – poor Stewart in Brooklyn found that out the hard way – but Craiggy was actually a little nervous about it.
"I had a little butterflies for the opening, because I wasn't sure how to open it, the right tenor to do it," Craig revealed about the solo hour he hosted on WFAN late last month before his official return. "I figured the Mad Dog thing was the right way. I had to discuss serious things, but I wanted people to know that the person they listened to for 10 years was back."
Of course, the group had some fun poking fun at Boomer about WFAN softball – apparently, Gio being the voice of reason is helping everyone tell Booms they're opting out? – and we found out just how much of a mole Al Dukes really is between shows.
"Al may or may not be the loose-lipped part of your staff, but he's told me that it irks him when he makes the commitment to go to a game, and you bench him!" Craig said, which sent Gio into speak up mode in agreement.
And of course, there was more about Boomer's huge need for Junk Balm – "you're in good company based on the top 3 guesses," Craig said of the semi-SFW photo he Tweeted – Gio and Al's venture into Bitcoin, and more shenanigans…before they all just settled on mocking Evan, given that Craig was sitting in what he called the "pimp chair" in their studio.
"I guess Evan has a bad back, and so he asked management for a comfy chair, and they gave him this pimp chair," Craig laughed. "What Evan does is he sits low and sits back, so half the time he's not on the camera in here, and there are times where I think he's just napping. Am I that boring now?"
Maybe, given that Ev is a "sports dork," if you will.
"Every single aspect of his life, in some way, has a direct correlation and relationship to some sporting event," Craig mused. "I have friends who are die-hard sports fans, but he's like, 'I farted back in '96, and that's when Aaron Boone hit a home run in the fifth inning.' I've never met anyone like that and I'm fascinated by that!"
Fascination you've heard on air over the first two weeks of the regime, but in reality, it has been much easier than even Craig expected for the new afternoon duo to build their rapport and figure out their on-air dynamic.
"It's weird. I did afternoons for five years before I came here 13 years ago, so it feels a little different just because of the time of day, and getting used to Evan and figuring out our dynamic – but to me, that's the fun part," Craig said. "As I explained to Evan off air, I do what I do and know how to do it one way, but I also have to be fair to Evan and let him breathe. It didn't happen on day one, but Boomer and I got to a point where we figured each other out; Evan, being the radio professional that he is, has allowed that to happen a lot quicker than maybe we thought."
All the love, but Craiggy did have one piece of advice for Gio, specifically his fine head of hockey hair.
"Any slight weakness is going to be attacked. You can't grow the mullet, knowing people are going to comment on it and attack it, and then be upset when they do!"
