The White Sox designated left-hander Dallas Keuchel for assignment on Saturday, less than 72 hours after he gave up six earned runs over two innings in a 16-7 loss to the Red Sox.

Keuchel, 34, was 2-5 with a 7.88 ERA in 32 innings over eight starts this season. That's a far cry from the Keuchel who was one of the best pitchers in baseball from 2014-18 in Houston, and is just two years removed from going 6-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 11 starts in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
However, Keuchel slipped to 9-9 with a 5.28 ERA for the White Sox last season, and was largely ineffective in 2022.
The lefty is in the final season of a three-year, $55.5-million deal signed with the White Sox in December 2019, so any team that claims him or trades for him would be on the hook for the remaining $14 million on his deal.
If and when he clears waivers, however, he would only be owed the pro-rated portion of the MLB minimum, so he could be an attractive short-term fit or even a Triple-A depth option for many teams. The Mets, for instance, are down three rotation members with two not expected back for at least another month, and the Cardinals are in a similar boat.
