The Yankees and Mets have moved in drastically different directions over the past month.
In the last 12 games alone, the Yanks have won all 12, while the Mets went 2-10. As a result, the outlook for the season has changed drastically, particularly in a numerical sense.
Baseball Reference, which updates its postseason odds daily, revealed which teams have seen the biggest rise and the biggest fall in playoff odds over the last 30 days, and the two interleague rivals are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
The surging Yankees have seen their playoff odds skyrocket from 14.8 to 88.7 percent in the last month, an increase of 73.9 percent, just behind the Reds at 74.5 percent for the most drastic increase in all of baseball. Meanwhile, the Mets' odds of playing in the postseason have plummeted from 34.3 to a lowly 0.8 percent, a decrease of 33.5 percent, trailing only the Padres, who have collapsed in the form of a 77.8 percent decline.
Both instances were reinforced by outside circumstances, as the Red Sox have played poorly of late and seen their playoff odds drop 32.7 percent, which helped the Yankees out immensely in their quest to get back in the postseason race. In the National League, the Braves caught fire and watched their playoff odds rise 60.5 percent, which only made the Mets' recent skid all the more damaging in their attempt to end a five-year postseason drought.
What has played out on the field has clearly translated to the numbers, as the Yanks have been the hottest team in baseball, while the Mets have looked like a shell of themselves in the second half of the season after holding on to first place in the NL East for three straight months. Quite the turnaround after the Mets looked like the better team in a three-game set in the Bronx over Fourth of July weekend.
