The Associated Press reported up-to-date payroll statuses for Major League Baseball teams, and the Yankees and Mets are getting set to pay up in luxury taxes.
Per the report, Steve Cohen's Mets currently hold the largest payroll in the league at $273.9 million, which would mark the first time the franchise ends a season with the highest payroll in baseball since 1989, when the team payroll was just over $21 million, or less than half of Max Scherzer's salary in 2022.
Cohen has shown a willingness to spend, and hasn't expressed much concern about luxury tax penalties. As a result, the richest owner in baseball will pay a penalty of roughly $29.9 million, right up with the Dodgers for the heftiest penalties in the league this season. Midseason trades that included acquiring Daniel Vogelbach, Darin Ruf, Mychal Givens, and Tyler Naquin put New York over the fourth penalty tier of $290 million.
The Yankees have the third-highest payroll in the league, and are set to pay a penalty tax of roughly $9.4 million. The Dodgers, Phillies, Padres, and Red Sox are the other teams set to pay taxes, just the second time that six teams will be penalized and the first time since 2016.
