Still holding the two best records in baseball, it is hard to talk about the Yankees and Mets’ success without dreaming of a second Subway Series in October.
It hasn’t happened in over two decades, but 2022 is shaping up to be one of the best chances to get that Big Apple jackpot since the dynasty Yankees dispatched the Mets in five games to win their third straight title in 2000.
Some in studio during Wednesday’s Carton and Roberts show were hyped about the idea. Evan was not among them.
“None of us should want this,” Evan said. “You’re gonna hear it on this radio station, all the pompoms, ‘It’s good, it’s good for business! It’s great for ratings!’ Shut up! It’s not good for fans. We do not want this.
“Yankee fans, Met fans, you don’t want this. Come together. It’s not good for us. I would not sit here and say ‘Boy, I really hope we both get there.’”
The debate began when a caller fired back at Evan for saying Yankee fans should be scared of facing the Mets in October, and Evan cleared things up when he said it wasn’t meant as a form of trash talk. He was simply drawing from his own life experience.
“You don’t know why I meant, ‘You should be scared of us.’ Can you live in a world where the Yankees lose the World Series to the Mets?” Evan said. “I want you to play out the remote possibility that unlike 2000, where that team was overrated, that the Mets beat you. It happens. You get unlucky, have a bad week. You now live in a world where forever you have to reckon with that fact that the Mets beat you in the World Series. You can’t live in that world, I’m sorry. It’s miserable.
“You would have to live with something you can never let go of. It’s been 20 years and it still haunts me what the Yankees did to the Mets.”
So, hope for a Subway Series at your own risk, because if it happens, one fanbase will be relentlessly tortured until the next opportunity for payback arrives, if it ever comes at all.
“I don’t think people are fathoming how much would be on the line if this happened,” Evan said. “If you are a die-hard fan, or just a good fan, this would change your lives forever, sports wise…if the Mets ever beat the Yankees, everything would change.”
