Boomer & Gio: Yankees, Mets wasted superb seasons from Gerrit Cole, Pete Alonso

Both the Yankees and Mets have a star that have been playing the part this season, which only adds to the frustration that both teams are in the midst of a lost season.

For the Yankees, they have their ace Gerrit Cole on the mound Tuesday night against the Tigers, and Boomer says the Yanks have wasted what will be a Cy Young season.

"He's gotta be the odds-on favorite to win the Cy Young," Boomer said. "What a waste."

Gio has a similar feeling about Pete Alonso, who is now up to 41 homers for a Mets team that is out of the race after selling at the deadline. Alonso went through a bad slump when the Mets were fading before their fire sale, and Boomer says that can likely be attributed to an injury he was playing through after being hit on the wrist in Atlanta.

"The Mets got off to such a bad start," Boomer said. "The Verlander injury, Carrasco sucked, it was bad all around. The Diaz injury. They just could never get out of their own way.

"I'm thinking Pete got hurt, and instead of missing four weeks, he missed four days…every single day, he wants to play."
