Many Yankee fans, and many of our on-air hosts at WFAN, believe it’s time for the Yankees to move on from manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman after another early playoff exit.
But according to SNY’s Andy Martino, those who share that desire are likely to be disappointed.
According to Martino, Hal Steinbrenner, while he hasn’t begun discussing a new contract with Cashman (Cashman’s current contract expired after this season), wants the longtime GM back with the organization, and Cashman is expected to accept a return. In addition, with Cashman expected back, a firing of Boone is not expected after Cashman brought Boone back on a new deal before this season, and the Yanks subsequently won 99 games, a division title, and reached the ALCS.
Still, the Yankees proved to be once again far inferior to the Astros, the current class of the American League, so if Steinbrenner thought a front office change was needed to get the Yanks over that Houston hump, this winter would be a convenient time given the expiration of Cashman’s contract.
But it doesn’t seem like that will be happening, and Boone and Cashman will both likely be back in 2023.
