Aaron Boone ejected after appearing to say nothing to home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt

Aaron Boone went ballistic to start Monday’s game against the A’s after he was tossed for something that appeared to be said in the box seats near the Yankee dugout, not from Boone himself.

Just two batters into the game, Boone got the hook from home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt, and Boone was immediately incredulous at the ejection. Others in the dugout pointed to the seats above, clamoring that the comments that set Wendelstedt off came from a fan.

Wendelstedt’s response was caught on the YES Network broadcast.

“I don’t care who said it,” Wendelstedt appeared to say. “You’re gone.”

Wendelstedt had sounded off on Boone just before, warning him that if he said another word, he would be ejected. Boone didn’t, but Wendelstedt clearly thought it came from Boone.

It was already Boone’s second ejection of the season. After the game, he said he would be reaching out to Major League Baseball about what unfolded in the eventual 2-0 loss.

"It’s embarrassing," Boone said. "It really is a bad - it’s embarrassing…just not good."

Wendelstadt was asked about the incident after the game, and said Boone was not tossed because of whatever the fan said, but something said on the far end of the Yankee dugout.

"Aaron Boone is the manager of the New York Yankees and is responsible for everything that happens in that dugout," Wendelstadt said, via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. "I don’t want to eject a ballplayer. We need to keep them in the game. That’s what the fans pay to see. Aaron Boone runs the Yankees. He got ejected.

"I have never ejected a player or a manager for something a fan has said. I understand that’s going to be part of a story or something like that because that’s what Aaron was portraying. I heard something come from the far end of the dugout, had nothing to do with his area but he’s the manager of the Yankees. So he’s the one that had to go."
