Aaron Boone expects Giancarlo Stanton to be ready when eligible to return from IL

Giancarlo Stanton will be eligible to come off the injured list on Monday, when the Yankees are off, and manager Aaron Boone told Carton & Roberts Friday that he expects Stanton to be ready for the start of next week’s series with

“He was out taking BP today and looks like he’s going to be ready as soon as he’s eligible,” Boone said. “The last couple days have gone well as he has ramped up, and I’m sure he’ll have to go through and do some more extensive running. We’ll see what the weekend brings, but he’s close.”

Stanton was placed on the IL Monday retroactive to last Friday, as he last played in last Thursday’s series finale in Tampa Bay. During that game, in his second at-bat, he first felt something in his quad, but thought it was minor and finished the game.

He was in the lineup for Friday’s game in Baltimore originally, too, but he said something to Boone, and that led to where we are now.

“I didn’t know anything about it. I think it was minor enough even in his mind, but he came in and said he had a little thing going on,” Boone said. “Knowing his body and his history, he said he didn’t want this to turn into something long-term, so I’m glad he was out ahead of it.”

Stanton had been on a tear before the injury, hitting .316 in May and rocking a 12-game hit streak from April 23-May 6, so getting him back will be a boost to a Yankees offense that went 7-3 on their recent road trip despite a low run total.

However, even with the Yankees’ outfield so banged-up that Tyler Wade started Thursday’s game in right field, don’t expect to see Stanton in the outfield anytime soon.

“This definitely puts that idea on pause for me, at least initially,” Boone said. “I wouldn’t say it eliminates it altogether, but in the short term, when we get him back, I don’t plan on putting him there anytime soon.”
