Aaron Boone: Gio Urshela was 'fine' postgame, 'hopefully he's back tomorrow'

There is no minimum stay requirement for MLB’s COVID injured list, so it was seemingly a no-brainer for the Yankees to place Gio Urshela on said I.L. Friday after he had an adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Even if, as manager Aaron Boone said after the Yankees’ 10-5 loss to the Rays, Urshela is “hopefully back tomorrow.”

Urshela was scratched from the Yankees’ lineup a little over an hour before game time, and shortly after, the Yankees announced Urshela was being placed on the COVID injured list due to side effects from vaccination.
Boone had already concluded his pregame media availability, but had an update after the game.

“He just wasn’t feeling well before the game, probably in a reaction to the vaccines. We had a number of guys yesterday that were feeling a little under the weather, and Gio was one of those guys,” Boone said. “He actually came in this morning fine, but once he got rolling a little, he had those symptoms a little bit.”

Boone said that when he talked to Urshela after the game, the third baseman “felt good,” and “hopefully he’s back tomorrow.”

Many Yankees received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine after Wednesday’s game against the Orioles, prior to the team traveling to Tampa. Side effects have been very common among those receiving any variants of the vaccine, but with Urshela having battled COVID-19 this winter, that may have exacerbated any effects from the vaccination.
