The Yankees’ top concern as of Tuesday night was likely of their ace Gerrit Cole, who called for a trainer in the fourth inning of a 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays before exiting the game with hamstring tightness.
Boone told reporters before Wednesday’s game that the outlook on Cole was encouraging, but not yet solidified.
“Went through some testing and that went well,” Boone said. “Know he’s getting ready to go on the treadmill right now.
“I think he’s encouraged. I don’t think we have anything definitive yet. I think the next 24-48 hours will determine where me move and how he responds, but I think he was encouraged with how he felt coming in here and the start of going through some different treatment things and what he’s able to handle workload-wise.”
That testing did not include an MRI, but Boone didn’t rule out one if Cole doesn’t respond as hoped in the coming days.
“We’ll see if that’s in the cards moving forward,” Boone said. “I don’t know yet.”
Cole has been a Cy Young candidate this season, heading into Tuesday night’s start with a 2.73 ERA and is tied for the league lead with 217 strikeouts. He has missed time this season due to COVID-19, and said he was hopeful that he wouldn’t have to miss a start due to his hamstring. But the coming days will likely determine that.
