Aaron Boone provides updates on Justin Wilson and Clarke Schmidt

The Yankees have multiple pitchers nursing injuries right now, and Aaron Boone provided updates on two of them on Thursday.

Clarke Schmidt and Justin Wilson are both out for the Yanks, and while both have received encouraging news recently, neither are throwing just yet.

Schmidt, who suffered an extensor strain in his pitching elbow back on Feb. 22, is still waiting to throw for the first time since suffering the injury, and while the initial timeline was 3-4 weeks, Boone is hopeful that the Yankees’ top pitching prospect will be able to begin a throwing program sooner than later.

“Still not throwing,” Boone said on a Zoom call with reporters on Thursday. “He still has just a little bit of discomfort in there still. He’s able to do quite a bit of upper body and weight room things, but until he is completely asymptomatic, he won’t start his throwing program.”

While Schmidt’s discomfort level has improved, the Yankees are still waiting to hear that he feels fully healthy before building him up for the season. The righty won’t be ready for Opening Day, but the hope is for Schmidt to begin his road back to game action in the coming days.

“We are hoping that’s imminent and any day, but until he gets any level of discomfort out of there, he won’t start a throwing program,” Boone said.

Lefty reliever Justin Wilson hasn’t thrown yet either, not since leaving his last spring training outing with shoulder tightness, which resulted in an MRI that didn’t reveal any structural damage, certainly a relief for the Yanks, who are already without top southpaw reliever Zack Britton. Wilson is still considered day-to-day, but could resume throwing soon with Opening Day just a week away.

“He won’t throw for at least a few days,” Boone said. “Hopefully by the end of the week he’ll start back with throwing again.”
