Matt Carpenter, after a monster season was interrupted by a fractured foot, is on the Yankees’ ALDS roster, but is not in the starting lineup for game one.
Aaron Boone was asked about Carpenter’s role in this series, and it sounds as if the Yankee skipper has Carpenter tabbed as a bench bat for the ALDS.

“He looks really good. You know, he's had a number of live at-bats, really, for the last week or ten days now,” Boone said. “And he looks really good, and feels really good, especially at the plate. And even these last couple days, has continued to move around better.
“So, you know, if I needed to, could probably, if we got a situation, put him in the field if I had to. But right now I see him as that big bat off the bench.”
Giancarlo Stanton isn’t a likely candidate to play the field either, and he is the starting DH for game one. So, two of the Yankees’ most prolific power threats outside of Aaron Judge are currently confined to one spot.
