Aaron Boone didn’t hide from the Yankees’ struggles of late after Wednesday’s loss to the Angels, acknowledging that the offense looks putrid after striking out 42 times in a three-game sweep.
“We stink right now,” Boone said. “We acknowledge that.”
Of course, acknowledgement is only half the battle, and the Yankees need to turn things around before burying themselves in too deep a hole in the Wild Card race. Currently, the scuffling Bombers are 3.5 games back of the final playoff spot, and the offense is showing no signs of breaking out.
“We acknowledge where we are. We’re not very good right now,” Boone said. “We understand that. Certainly, this is a low point for us. The silver lining in it all is that it is in front of us, and we control that. We understand that.”
It won’t be in front of the Yanks for long if this level of play continues. Waiting for Aaron Judge or a trade deadline acquisition to rescue the offense will likely not be enough. The current veterans in the lineup need to get going, and Boone still expects that to happen. It just needs to happen in a hurry.
“We’re not in a good place as a team right now,” Boone said. “We’re not playing anywhere near the ball we need to play to put ourselves in a good position at the end of the season, but understand we’re in the fight and we need to continue to stay in the fight and understand that we control all of this with our play. This doesn’t feel good, when you’re getting your teeth kicked in or you have a bad road trip…but we gotta deal with it.”
